How do I grow in intimacy with Jesus?
By Matthew (Tolu) Olowoyeye
ScriptureJohn 15:4-5
Growing in intimacy with Jesus is a beautiful and lifelong journey, much like nurturing any deep relationship. It begins with a sincere desire for Him, recognizing that He is not just a historical figure or a distant deity, but a living, loving Person who longs for a close connection with you. Prioritize spending consistent, dedicated time with Him, not as a duty, but as a privileged appointment. Think of it as regularly meeting up with your dearest friend, eager to share your day and hear from them.
Central to this intimacy is engaging with His Word, the Bible. It's His love letter to you, His voice speaking directly to your heart. Don't just read it; meditate on it, chew on it, and ask the Holy Spirit to reveal its truths to you. Let His words shape your thoughts, comfort your fears, and guide your decisions. The more you immerse yourself in His character and promises as revealed in Scripture, the more deeply you will come to know and trust Him.
Prayer is another vital channel for intimacy. It’s not just about listing requests, but about honest, heartfelt conversation. Share your joys and your sorrows, your struggles and your triumphs, your doubts and your dreams. Listen for His gentle whispers in return, often through a peace that settles your spirit, a new understanding of a scripture, or even through the wise counsel of a trusted believer. Prayer is the breath of your spiritual life, keeping your connection with Him vibrant and alive.
Finally, allow your intimacy with Jesus to transform your everyday life. Seek to obey His commands, not out of fear, but out of love and gratitude. Serve others as an act of devotion to Him. As you walk with Him daily, acknowledging His presence in every situation, you'll find your heart growing closer to His. True intimacy is expressed in both private devotion and public demonstration of His love.
Prayer
Lord Jesus, I long to know You more intimately. Help me to draw near to You each day through Your Word and prayer. Cultivate in me a deep and abiding love for You. In Jesus' name, amen.
