What is the difference between grace and works?

Grace, in the Christian context, is God's unmerited favor and divine enablement, freely given to us not because of anything we have done or could do, but purely out of His love and goodness. It's a gift that initiates our salvation, sustains our spiritual walk, and empowers us for service. Think of it as God's outstretched hand, offering forgiveness, new life, and strength without any prerequisites on our part. It emphasizes God’s sovereignty and generosity in our redemption, highlighting that salvation is entirely His work, not ours.

Works, on the other hand, refer to human effort, deeds, or religious observances undertaken with the intention of earning God's favor, salvation, or righteousness. This could include following laws, performing good deeds, or participating in rituals. While good works are indeed a natural outflow of a life transformed by grace, they are never the basis or means by which we gain acceptance with God. The Bible consistently teaches that if salvation were dependent on our works, it would no longer be a gift but a wage, and no one could ever perfectly qualify.

The fundamental difference lies in their origin and purpose. Grace originates entirely from God's character and is given freely, leading to salvation and empowerment. Works originate from human effort and, when used as a means of salvation, are an attempt to earn what can only be received as a gift. Paul makes it clear that grace excludes works as a means of salvation, otherwise, grace would no longer be grace. Our works are a response to grace, an expression of gratitude, not a prerequisite for it.

Ultimately, grace is about what God has done for us through Christ, while works, when wrongly applied, are about what we try to do for ourselves to gain God's approval. True faith, therefore, is not a matter of balancing grace and works, but understanding that grace is the sole foundation, and good works are the evidence and fruit of a life redeemed and empowered by that grace. Our spiritual journey is a journey of receiving and responding, not one of earning and achieving.
